We’re “expatriates” (or, more properly, we’re about to be), we’re not “ex-patriots.” We still love our country, but to put “ex” and a hyphen ahead of something implies consummation (or, perhaps, dispatch), like “ex-husband.”

We have returned from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. It was hot and muggy, but the alternative was rain in Portland. In Portland when it rains, there’s no escaping the wet. In Puerto Vallarta when it gets hot, there’s always the Pacific. And the margaritas…

We talked this morning about the concept of “home.” If we’re to become serial expats, living here and there for three or six months at a time, will we feel homesickness? And if we feel it, for what home will we feel sick?
