“Every morning upon awakening, I experience a supreme pleasure: that of being Salvador Dalí!”
Egoistic, haughty, grandiose – but also a genius, comfortable with any artistic medium and any artistic period. That’s the man we went to see Tuesday morning when they told us there would be no running water in our building for the day. One has to pee once in a while, right? Might as well pee in a lavabos in a museum. It beats going to the gas station across the street every time.
And so we went, not just to any museum, but to the Teatro Museo Dalí, located in Figueres, a small town (population ~ 45,000), just a twenty-minute train ride up the road from Girona. We expected something eccentric; what we got was outlandish. (Click or tap on any picture to enlarge.)
Extraordinary photos!!! When I was a docent at the Corcoran Gallery in DC, the first lecture we had was on Dali. The only thing I remember about it was the fact that there was a toilet on the stage.

I’m not the least bit surprised about the toilet. There were little bathroom sinks all around the inside of the museum. Very imaginative!

Those eyes at top of steps are just plain creepy – Dali sure is way out there somewhere the rest of us may never find – thank you for some amazing photos – Marcia

Thanks, Marcia. Actually, it’s singular: it’s one eye. Everything else is mirrors — which, of course, makes it even more “out there.” I knew about the out there; what I didn’t know about was his chameleon-like ability to master any artistic style, any artistic medium, and any artistic era. The museum is a madhouse (and this isn’t high season), but it’s all worth it.

Reminds me of La Sagrada Famiglia by Gaudi in Barcelona or his Parqe Guell, also in Barcelona.

I’m so happy you finally discovered this outlandish place .
It was my favorite place to visit with friends & family when I used to live in Laroque-des -Albères. It’s packed in the summer.
Did you like the sofa in the shape of Marilyn’s lips ?

Oh, yes…and the Dali jewels and the gift shop! I cannot imagine the summer… it was packed in April on a weekday. Figueres is a lovely city as well.

Thanks, Polly. Coming from a fellow travel photographer, that’s high praise. But to be honest, it’s easy to look good when the subject is as photogenic as this one was.
