We wondered what would happen on a cruise ship on election day. Tricolor cupcakes? Food fights? Flag burning?
Boarding through security, we were happy for a great big “No Guns Allowed” sign. A screen the size of Vermont looms over the swimming pool, an ideal place for a watch party. Alas, no election coverage there. Travelogues, “Back to the Future,” and a Gaga documentary played all day.
On our own TV our election was the top story of the day, on the British and Australian news, followed by Queen Camilla’s chest infection.
But here aboard ship, the 1200 Americans raiding the buffet and roasting by the pool seem completely oblivious. They’re not, of course — who can ignore a contest between a potential first female president and a convicted felon, fascist, and sexual predator?
You can’t make this stuff up.
Still, in five days, we have not seen a single MAGA hat, or Harris T-shirt, or any other obvious partisan symbol. We’ve seen American flag shirts and navy veteran hats, but they can mean anything.
After roaming the ship for a few hours eavesdropping on conversations, all non-political, we retired to our own cabin television, where the news told us things were not … going well. We turned it off.
The next day we got off the ship for a visit to Hawaii. We’ll be house hunting in Tahiti.

Missed this before. Turning off the tv has been a universal reaction. Maybe not so common is house hunting in Tahiti. Has a definite attraction.
I did go house hunting in NC where Helene then swept through. Not the same as Tahiti……
